Do robot mowers get stolen? Anti-theft features compared

How often robot mowers are stolen, what a PIN, lift alarm, account lock and GPS tracking each do, and which brands need a 4G module or data plan for tracking.

Robot mowers do get stolen, but there are no good figures on how often. We found no police or insurer statistics for the US, Canada, the UK or Australia that count them separately. What we did find are individual cases, such as a burglary in North Yorkshire in early 2026 where a robotic mower was the only thing taken. Ecovacs describes theft as relatively uncommon. Still, a mower worth $1,000 or more sitting on an open front lawn is an easy target, which is why most makers now build in theft protection.

What the anti-theft features do

Most brands use several of these together. They overlap a lot, and only one of them helps you get the mower back.

FeatureWhat it doesExamples from the makers
PIN codeThe mower won't run until the code is enteredHusqvarna says an Automower cannot be used without it, and sounds an alarm if nobody enters the PIN within 30 seconds of pressing stop
Lift alarmA loud alarm when someone picks the mower upMentioned by Ecovacs, Dreame, Eufy, Navimow and Husqvarna
Account lockThe mower stays linked to the owner's account and won't pair with a new oneMammotion says its mowers are permanently linked to the first account that activates them
GeofenceYour phone gets an alert when the mower leaves the lawnNavimow lets you set 10 to 50 m; Mammotion alerts at more than 50 m from the lawn
GPS trackingThe mower reports its position over mobile data, so you can see where it wentBuilt in on many models, an add-on on others (see below)

Number of models per brand on sale in at least one of the US, Canada, the UK and Australia. "With add-on" includes models where the maker doesn't say whether a module is needed.

Altogether, 66 models have tracking built in and 10 need or may need an extra module, while 6 have no GPS tracking at all.

Data plans after the free period

Tracking runs over 4G, and the terms for that data differ a lot by brand. Husqvarna says Automower Connect is free, and its built-in SIM is meant to last 10 years as long as the mobile network still supports it. Mammotion includes three years of 4G data with its 2026 models, after which US plans cost $19.90 for three months or $49.90 for a year.

Navimow sells the Access+ 4G module for its cheaper models at $119.99 in the US, with a year of data included. Renewal is $32.90 a year in the US and Canada and A$49.90 in Australia. Worx sells Find My Landroid as an add-on for the Landroid Vision, with a year of service included and $29.99 a year after that.

These are the prices on the makers' sites in October 2026. Check them before you buy, because data plans change more often than mower prices.

Simple things that help

Where the base station stands makes a difference. A mower that parks out of sight of the street draws less attention, and even when the front lawn is the only lawn, the base can usually go along the side of the house or behind a low hedge. It also helps to have it mow while someone is home. Keep the serial number and the receipt somewhere you'll find them again, because the police and your insurer will both ask, and find out from your insurer whether yard equipment left outside is covered at all.

Husqvarna's advice after a theft covers the obvious steps, starting with a police report, then a call to your dealer and one to your home insurer. If the app still shows a GPS position, pass it on to the police instead of driving over there yourself.

The fit check can take tracking into account. Under "More details", tick "I want GPS tracking in case it's stolen". Models with built-in tracking then move up the list, and the rest move down.

Common questions

Do robot lawn mowers have trackers?

Many do: 66 of the 87 wire-free models on sale in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia have GPS tracking built in, and another 10 can track with an add-on module. Tracking needs a mobile data connection, which is usually free for the first year or more and then becomes a paid plan with some brands.

Can a stolen robot mower be used by someone else?

With most current brands, not easily. Mammotion says its mowers are permanently linked to the first account that activates them, Navimow ties each mower to one account, and Husqvarna says an Automower cannot be used without its PIN code. A thief can still sell it for parts, which is why tracking and a visible deterrent help.
