Robot mower for 1 acre: how big a rating you need

A 1-acre lawn needs a mower rated for more than 1 acre. How area ratings are worked out, how long a mower takes per acre and which wire-free models are rated high enough.

A robot mower on a large lawn in an orchard

One acre works out to 43,560 sq ft (about 4,047 m²), and a mower rated for exactly that usually falls behind on a real acre. For a 1-acre lawn we'd look for a rating of at least 1.25 acres (5,060 m²). Among the 87 wire-free models on sale in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia, 6 meet that, and another 8 are rated between 1 acre and that figure.

What an area rating promises

Makers don't all measure area the same way, and most don't explain it on the product page. Husqvarna does. Its area capacity assumes the mower is allowed to run around the clock, seven days a week, on flat ground. Lymow calls its 1.73 acres a day "a theoretical laboratory maximum under ideal conditions". Dreame rates the A1 Pro per 24 hours and says the figure comes from its own lab tests.

Very few lawns get those conditions. Rain and your own schedule both cut into mowing time. Trees, flower beds and narrow strips cost time in turns. In the UK, hedgehog charities ask owners to mow in daylight only, which takes the night hours out of the schedule. Airseekers rates its mowers per 24 hours, and Lymow's figure assumes no breaks for charging, so we count half of both.

Why 1.25 acres for a 1-acre lawn

The fit check calls a lawn a clear fit when it uses up to 80% of the rating, and up to 70% when the lawn is split into several areas or sits under heavy tree cover. On 1 acre that works out to a rating of 1.25 acres, or 1.43 acres for a split or shaded lawn. Between that and the rating itself, the check shows a tight fit. Expect a mower in that range to fall behind after a wet week or two.

Several models land just short. The 6 rated for 5,000 m², which is 1.24 acres, come out as a tight fit on exactly 1 acre. If your acre includes the house, the driveway and the flower beds, the lawn itself is usually well under an acre. Measure the grass only. Satellite maps such as Google Earth have a measure tool that's accurate enough.

Of these 14, 12 use satellite positioning (RTK), usually helped by a camera or LiDAR. On a big open lawn that is the norm, since a satellite fix works anywhere with a view of the sky. If your acre has a lot of trees, read our guide to robot mowers under trees before you pick one.

How long it takes, per acre

Robot mowers cut slowly. Most cut a strip 19 to 40 cm (7 to 16 in) wide, and the published speeds vary a lot. Navimow gives 60 to 100 m² an hour for the i105, which is 40 to 67 hours of mowing for one acre. Ecovacs quotes about 120 m² an hour for the GOAT in its efficiency mode. Mammotion says the LUBA 3 takes about an hour for 0.12 acres, which would be around 8 hours an acre. Lymow claims 0.23 acres an hour.

Add charging time on top of that. Mammotion's LUBA 2 AWD, for example, is rated for 0.37 acres on one charge and 1.25 acres a day. On a big lawn the mower spends a fair share of the day on its base.

Two smaller mowers instead of one big one

Once a lawn goes past about 2 acres, or splits into a front and back with a road or a long driveway in between, two mowers can be the simpler setup. Each one gets its own map and its own base, and neither has to cross the driveway. Our guide to mowers for separate lawns covers when one mower can manage the trip and when it can't.

Common questions

How long does a robot mower take to mow 1 acre?

Longer than most people expect, because robot mowers cut a narrow strip slowly. Going by the makers' own figures, the Navimow i105 manages 60 to 100 m² an hour, which is 40 to 67 hours for an acre, and Ecovacs gives about 120 m² an hour for its GOAT range in efficiency mode, or about 34 hours. Faster models such as the Lymow One Plus quote 0.23 acres an hour. None of these figures were measured by us.

What size robot mower do I need for half an acre?

Look for a rating of at least 0.63 acres (2,530 m²), so the mower isn't running flat out. Among the wire-free models on sale in our four countries, 27 of 87 are rated that high. With several separate lawns or a lot of tree cover, aim higher still.

Can one robot mower handle 2 acres?

Not comfortably. The highest rating among the wire-free models we track is 2.47 acres (Segway Navimow X390), which leaves no margin on 2 acres. Two mowers splitting the lawn is the usual answer.
