Australia gets fewer robot mower models than the US, but the choice is now wide enough to find one for most blocks. In our last price check we found 21 wire-free models on sale here, from 9 brands. The cheapest cost A$1,499 and the most expensive A$7,999, with half of them under A$3,499. All prices include GST.

What decides whether one will work on your block is mostly the same as anywhere: how big the lawn is, how steep the steepest part is, and how much of it sits under trees. A few things matter more in Australia, though. Buffalo and kikuyu lawns are thicker than the grass most makers test on, summers are hot, and many front yards include a nature strip that the mower has to reach across a driveway or footpath.

Buffalo and kikuyu lawns

Makers rarely say anything about grass type, and none of the spec sheets we read rate a mower for buffalo or kikuyu. In practice the issue is density and growth rate. A thick buffalo lawn makes the blades work harder, so the mower uses more battery per square metre and may need more passes. Kikuyu in summer can grow fast enough that a mower set to run twice a week falls behind.

Three things help. Set the cutting height near the top of the range, so the mower only trims the tips. Let it run more often, not longer. And cut the lawn down by hand before the first run, because no robot mower is built to take a long lawn back to height. Of the models sold here, 20 cut to 60 mm or higher, which leaves room to keep buffalo at a healthy height.

Large blocks and slopes

Australian blocks are often bigger than suburban lawns elsewhere. 8 of the models on sale here are rated for 2,000 m² or more. Ratings assume best-case conditions, so we look for a rating about a quarter above your lawn size, and more if the lawn is split or under trees. Our guide to mowers for large lawns explains the margin.

For slopes, 16 models are rated for 45% (about 24°) or more, and 9 have all-wheel drive. A rating is measured on dry grass in a straight line, so keep a margin there too. The slopes guide shows why the edge of a slope matters more than the middle.

Trees, the nature strip and getting signal

Most wire-free mowers find their way with satellites and need a clear view of the sky. Big gums next to the lawn can block that signal, and so can a two-storey house. 7 of the models sold here use cameras or a laser scanner instead, so they don't depend on the sky at all. Our trees guide explains which type suits which garden.

A nature strip usually means a trip down the driveway. Measure the tightest point on that route, which is often between the car and the fence, and look up whether the model drives between separate lawns on its own. The narrow passages guide lists the minimum gap for each model, and the multiple lawns guide covers paths and driveways.

Heat and spare parts

Heat is hard on batteries. Put the charging station in shade if you can, and set the mower to run in the morning. A front lawn on a busy street is also an easy place to lose a mower: 19 of the models sold here have GPS tracking, built in or as an add-on. Our theft guide compares the features.

Finally, ask who fixes it. Some brands sell through their own Australian store and a few big retailers, others only through a marketplace. Before you buy, check where spare blades and repairs come from, because waiting weeks for a part in the middle of summer is a complaint we came across again and again from Australian owners.

Common questions

Which robot mowers are sold in Australia?

We found 21 wire-free models on sale in Australia from 9 brands: Anthbot, Dreame, Ecovacs, Eufy, GOKO, Husqvarna, Mammotion, Roborock, Segway Navimow. Prices in our last check ran from A$1,499 to A$7,999 including GST.

Can a robot mower cut buffalo or kikuyu grass?

Yes, with some care. Buffalo is dense and kikuyu grows fast in summer, and both load the blades more than the cool-season grass the brands test on. Keep the cut high, let the mower run often so it never has much to take off, and mow it short by hand before the first run. 20 of the 21 models sold here cut to 60 mm or higher.

When is the best time to buy a robot mower in Australia?

Searches for robot mowers in Australia peak from September to December, when lawns start growing again. That is also when brands run their spring sales, so prices can move a lot in a few weeks. Check the date next to each price on this page.

Does heat damage a robot mower?

Batteries charge more slowly and wear faster in high heat, and plastic bodies fade in strong sun. A shaded spot for the charging station helps, and so does a schedule that runs early in the morning instead of in the afternoon heat.
