A wire-free robot mower no longer has to cost well over £1,500 in the UK. In our last price check we found 21 wire-free models on sale here from 9 brands, starting at £675, with 5 of them under £1,000. All prices include VAT.
British gardens set their own tests. Many are small, with more edge than lawn. Plenty slope, some are split over levels, and the lawn behind a terraced house is often reached through a narrow side passage. Then there is the weather: a wet lawn for months and hedgehogs out at night. The sections below go through each of these, with the figures for the models you can buy here.

Small gardens and side passages
10 of the models sold here are rated for 1,000 m² or less, which covers most UK back gardens with room to spare. Size flatters a small lawn, though. Every bed and corner adds turns, so a lawn with curved borders keeps a mower busier than its square metres suggest. Every model leaves a strip along walls and beds that you will still trim by hand.
If the mower has to reach the front through a side passage or a gate, measure the narrowest point. Only 7 models sold here are cleared by their maker for gaps of 80 cm or less. The narrow passages guide lists the minimum gap for every model, and the multiple lawns guide covers front and back gardens.
Sloping gardens and levels
For a sloping garden, 15 models are rated for 45% (about 24°) or more, and 10 have all-wheel drive. A rating is measured on dry grass, and a wet British slope is anything but, so keep a margin of about a quarter below the rating. Steps stop every robot mower. With a lawn on two levels you carry it up and down unless there's a ramp, and it has to store each level as a separate area. Where a slope ends at a wall or a drop, look at the edge rating in the slopes guide.
Large gardens
For gardens over half an acre, 8 of the models sold here are rated for 2,000 m² or more. Ratings assume best-case conditions, so look for a rating about a quarter above your lawn size, and more if the lawn is split or shaded. Our guide to mowers for large lawns works through the margin.
Trees and satellite signal
Satellite navigation wants open sky overhead. In a terraced garden with a tall hedge at the back and houses either side, there may not be much of it. 8 of the models sold here use cameras or a laser scanner instead, which can suit a narrow, overlooked garden better. The trees guide explains the difference.
Rain, winter and wildlife
A soft lawn ruts quickly, worst on slopes and at the turning points along the edges. From late autumn the grass hardly grows anyway, so most owners park the mower until spring in a shed or under its own cover. For the rest of the year, keep it to daylight hours. Hedgehogs and frogs come out at dusk.
Common questions
Which robot mowers without a perimeter wire are sold in the UK?
We found 21 wire-free models on sale in the UK from 9 brands: Dreame, Ecovacs, Eufy, Husqvarna, Mammotion, Roborock, Segway Navimow, Sunseeker, Worx. In our last check they cost from £675 to £4,799 including VAT.
Is a robot mower safe for hedgehogs?
Run it in daylight only. Hedgehogs forage after dark, and no maker claims its sensors will reliably pick out a curled-up one. Most apps let you set mowing hours, and some brands block night mowing out of the box.
Can a robot mower cope with a wet British lawn?
Light rain is fine for most of them, and models with a rain sensor head home when it gets heavy. Winter is the real problem. A waterlogged lawn ruts easily, so many owners stop from November to March, when the grass barely grows anyway.
What is the cheapest wire-free robot mower in the UK?
In our last price check the cheapest wire-free model cost £675, and 5 models were under £1,000. The table on this page lists them all with the shop and the date we checked.
