Best robot lawn mower for your lawn: picks for six common yards
The best robot lawn mower depends on your lawn. Our fit check picks three wire-free mowers each for small, large, steep, shaded and split lawns, with US prices.

Find the best fit for my lawnWhich of these fit your lawn?
Most "best robot lawn mower" lists rank mowers as if every lawn were the same. They are not. The mower that wins on a small, flat, open lawn can get stuck on a steep one, lose its way under trees, or fall behind on half an acre. So this page doesn't crown a winner. It takes six common US lawns and shows the three mowers our fit check picks for each, from 60 wire-free models on sale in the US.
The picks come straight from the check. It compares each lawn with the maker's own figures and keeps a margin, because ratings are measured in best-case conditions. Among the mowers that fit, the cleanest fit comes first, then the lowest price. We show one model per brand so you see three real alternatives. Nobody paid to be on this page, and the order changes when prices or specs do.
Small, flat lawn
Example: 2,000 sq ft, flat, open sky. Almost any wire-free mower can handle this, so it comes down to price. The cheaper camera and LiDAR models need no antenna, which keeps setup simple in a small yard. 47 models fit this lawn.

Half an acre with some trees
Example: half an acre, gentle slope, some trees. Half an acre with a few trees is where the list gets shorter. A mower rated for exactly half an acre falls behind, so the check looks for about a quarter more. 15 models fit this lawn.

One acre, mostly open
Example: 1 acre, gentle slope, open sky. Only a handful of mowers are rated high enough for a full acre with margin, and they are not cheap. Two smaller mowers sharing the lawn is a fair alternative. 2 models fit this lawn.

Lawn under trees
Example: 5,000 sq ft, gentle slope, lots of trees. Under a dense canopy, satellite mowers lose their fix. The check leans toward models that see with cameras or a laser scanner instead. 22 models fit this lawn.

Steep lawn
Example: 5,000 sq ft, steep (about 60%), open sky. A 60% slope rules out most two-wheel-drive mowers. The picks here are rated well above it, and all-wheel drive shows up for a reason. 17 models fit this lawn.

Front and back lawn
Example: 6,000 sq ft in two lawns joined by a path, some trees. Two lawns need a mower that stores more than one area and drives between them on a path you map. Most current models do. 41 models fit this lawn.

Why your own lawn matters more than any list
Two numbers on a spec sheet carry most of the decision: the rated area and the rated slope. Both are measured in good conditions, on dry grass, with the mower working long hours. Real lawns have wet weeks, shade, beds to steer around and a path to the side yard. That is why the check keeps a margin on both, and why a mower that looks big enough on paper can still show up as a tight fit.
The other things that change the answer don't show up in most reviews. Satellite mowers need open sky above them, which trees and tall buildings take away. Many models need a gap of 70 cm to 1 m to get from one lawn to the next. Thick St. Augustine grass needs a mower that can cut high. Our guides go into each of these: slopes, trees, narrow passages, several lawns and large lawns.
Outside the US the picks are different, because each country sells its own range at its own prices. See our pages for the UK, Canada and Australia, or set your country in the check.
Common questions
What is the best robot lawn mower?
There is no single best one, because the right mower depends on your lawn. A model that does fine on a small flat yard can struggle on a steep or shaded one. That is why this page gives picks per type of lawn, and why the fit check runs every model against your own answers.
How did you choose these mowers?
We ran each example lawn through the same fit check you can use on the home page. It compares the lawn with each maker's published area rating, slope rating, positioning type and zone support, keeps a margin, and then sorts the mowers that fit by how cleanly they fit and by price. We show at most one model per brand. Nobody paid to be listed, and we have not tested these mowers ourselves.
What is the best robot lawn mower without a perimeter wire?
Every mower on this site works without a boundary wire. In the US we track 60 wire-free models on sale. Which one is best for you comes down to lawn size, slope, trees and gaps, which is exactly what the check looks at.
