Robot mower for 2 acres or more: one big mower or two?
No wire-free robot mower covers 2 acres with room to spare. The models rated over an acre, and how one big mower compares with two smaller ones sharing the lawn.

Check a 2-acre lawnWhich of these fit your lawn?
For 2 acres the honest answer is short: no wire-free robot mower on sale today covers it with room to spare. The biggest rating we track is 2.5 acres, for the Segway Navimow X390, and that leaves the mower working at about 81% of its rating on 2 acres. Below it, ratings drop to around 1.5 to 2 acres. So a lawn this size usually means one big mower that runs flat out, or two smaller mowers that share the work.
Both can work. Which one suits you depends on how the lawn is laid out, how much shade it gets, and your budget. This guide runs through the figures for both routes, using only models you can actually buy.
Every mower rated for an acre or more
These are all the wire-free models we track that their maker rates for at least one acre. The ratings are the maker's own, measured in best-case conditions. For a lawn that is split up or under trees, the real capacity is lower.

Route 1: one big mower
The Segway Navimow X390 is the only model rated above 2 acres, at $4,499 in our last US price check. On an open, fairly flat lawn of 2 acres it can work, but there is no slack. Rain, fast spring growth or a few weeks of fallen leaves and it falls behind, because it already mows almost all day. On a lawn with trees, several separate areas or a lot of edge, the time lost to turning and finding its way pushes it over.
If you go this route, keep the lawn as one connected area, put the charging station in the middle so the mower doesn't waste battery driving back, and accept that it will look less even after a busy week.
Route 2: two mowers, two areas
Split the lawn into two areas of about an acre each, give each mower its own charging station, and map them so they never overlap. Each mower then needs a rating of at least 1.3 acres, which is an acre plus our margin of 25%. Only 6 models we track meet that, and most of them are not sold in the US. If you accept a tight fit on each half, any of the 14 models rated for a full acre will do. The cheapest of those in our last US price check is the Worx Landroid Vision Cloud WR340 at $1,749.99, so a pair comes to about $3,499.98. Split the lawn three ways instead and the choice widens again, because each mower then only needs to cover about two thirds of an acre.
Two mowers cost more up front and you have twice the blades and batteries to look after. In return each one runs with margin, a breakdown leaves half the lawn mowed instead of none, and you can mix types: a satellite mower on the open part, and one that sees with cameras or LiDAR under the trees.
What makes 2 acres harder than the number suggests
Large lawns are rarely one clean rectangle. They have tree lines, beds, a pond, a drive across the middle. Every obstacle adds turns and short runs, and a mower that spends its time turning cuts less grass per charge. Satellite mowers also need open sky near the edges, and big lots often have a tree line exactly there. Our trees guide explains which positioning type copes with that.
Distance matters too. On 2 acres the far corner can be a few hundred feet from the charging station, and the mower drives that distance every time it goes home to charge. A central station, or two stations with two mowers, saves a lot of that time.
Slopes on large lots
Rural lots often slope down to a field or a ditch somewhere. Big mowers are not automatically good climbers. Check the slope rating as well as the area, and keep a margin on both. The slopes guide covers what the ratings mean, and the 1-acre guide explains the area margin in more detail.
Common questions
Is there a robot mower for 2 acres?
Not one we would call comfortable. The highest rating among the wire-free models on sale in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia is 2.5 acres, for the Segway Navimow X390. On 2 acres that mower runs at about 81% of its rating, which our check marks as a tight fit. None is rated high enough to cover 2 acres with our margin of a quarter.
Can two robot mowers share one lawn?
Yes. Most owners of large lawns who go robotic end up with two mowers, each with its own charging station and its own map. You split the lawn into two areas that do not overlap, so the mowers never meet. Each one then only needs to cover about half the lawn, which brings many more models into reach.
How long does a robot mower take to mow 2 acres?
Longer than most buyers expect. The ratings assume the mower runs most of the day, every day, with breaks to charge. A mower rated for 2.5 acres keeps a 2-acre lawn short over a week, not in a single afternoon. That is fine for upkeep, but after a holiday or a spring growth spurt it will fall behind for a while.
